Linear Oscillatory Cellular Thermocapillary Convection in Liquid Layers
A linear stability analysis is performed on a thermal, stratified liquid layer with a deformable thermocapillary surface. The objective is to investigate the possibility and conditions for existence of oscillatory cellular convection in the linear thermocapillary system. In general, the principle of the exchange of stabilities for the onset of cellular convection in liquid layers with deformabl...
متن کاملBifurcation analysis of the thermocapillary convection in cylindrical liquid bridges
We consider the instability of the steady, axisymmetric thermocapillary convection in cylindrical liquid bridges. Finite-difference method is applied to compute the steady axisymmetric basic solutions, and to examine their linear instability to three-dimensional modal perturbations. The numerical results show that for liquid bridges of O(1) aspect ratio Γ (=length/radius) the first instability ...
متن کاملStructural drift corresponding to the critical excitations
While the existing structures, even recently constructed ones are subjected to the critical earthquakes, the catastrophic devastations are expected to occur. Therefore, at least for several important structures such as power plants, infrastructure, and buildings, there is a need to consider the critical excitation analysis. One of the important criteria in the seismic design of the structures u...
متن کاملUnderstanding Particle Accumulation Structures (PAS) in Thermocapillary Liquid Bridges
Particle accumulation structures (PAS) in liquid bridges are considered in a didactic approach. After reviewing the experimental results on PAS we explain PAS as a limit cycle of the particle motion in the frame of reference co-rotating with the hydrothermal wave. The limit cycles representing PAS are created by perturbations of the motion of perfect tracer particles. Therefore, the topology of...
